Getting a Dental Crown on Your Tooth

A dental crown is a porcelain cap that fits over your tooth to improve its shape or appearance. Many people choose to have their crown placed to cover a tooth that’s broken, weakened by decay, or cosmetically flawed. The crowns we create at Vosh Dental are of the highest quality possible! When compared to fillings, crowns are much more effective at preventing tooth decay and preserving your natural tooth structure. That’s because covers completely cover the tooth all the way down to the gum line. This protects them from plaque buildup that causes decay. Plus, they look just like your natural teeth so they blend right in with your smile. You’ll love how great they look and how confident you’ll feel about their wear resistance and durability.

What Is Involved in Getting a Dental Crown?

The process for placing a dental crown starts with our dentist preparing your tooth for the crown by filing it down so that there is room for the crown to fit over the top of it, similar to the way you would prepare a cavity before filling a tooth with a dental composite. After the tooth is prepared, we will take an impression of your teeth so that we can create a perfectly-shaped crown for you. Then, we will send the impression to our dental lab, where your restoration will be fabricated from high-quality materials. Before you leave our office, we will ensure that the crown fits properly and matches the rest of your teeth.

We will place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it until you return to our office for your second appointment. On your second visit, we will remove your temporary crown and place your new restoration. Our dentist will make sure it fits correctly and is seated comfortably before you leave our office with your final restoration in place.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped shell that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. There are many different types of crowns, including porcelain, ceramic, gold alloy, and metal alloy. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are most common because they can be made to match the color of your teeth so that your restored smile looks natural and beautiful.

You may need a crown if your tooth is cracked or fractured at the gumline. The crown will cap the tooth and prevent further damage from occurring. You may also need a dental crown if you have a large cavity that is too large for a filling. In this case, the entire tooth will be capped with the restoration. Lastly, if you have a root canal on your tooth, you will most likely receive a temporary crown to cover the tooth until the permanent crown has been made. This temporary crown protects the tooth until it is ready for permanent restoration.

Once your dentist has determined you need a dental crown, local anesthesia will be used to numb the treated area. Then the crown will be put in place, adjusted, and polished so that it looks natural and matches the surrounding teeth. Once your new dental crown is in place, it will be protected from future damage so you can continue to brush and floss normally. These factors will help to keep your restored smile looking beautiful and natural for years to come.
